I love the animated film ‘The Lion King 3: Hakuna Matata’ powered by Waltz Disney Home Entertainment. The story revolves around a young Meerkat called Timon who lived in the Meerkat colony far away from a dreamland called Pride Rock. After a series of failed attempts to fit into the routine of digging tunnels underground as well as a sentry to keep away from their arch-enemy – the hyenas – who had the cats for their daily meals. Timon decided to leave the Meerkat colony that he had lived all his life to finding a place that is right for him. Unlike the other members of the colony, Timon bravely decided to follow his intuition in search of a dream home different from what he had always known regardless of the fear of the unknown expressed by his mother and beloved uncle, Max.
“The lack of courage, fear of what people will say and the uncommon nature of a pursuit prevents a lot of people from living their dreams.”
Though, Timon grew up in an environment of constant fear and panic along with a mindset that they occupy the bottom of the food chain where they are eaten by all and feared by no one. Yet, he had a longing in his heart to connect with, a desire to be where he won’t have to dig tunnels and run away from their enemies. He had a hunger to reach for the stars and live a new attitude. Eventually, Timon followed his heart and arrived at the dream place called Pride Rock with the help of his friends Pumbaa and Rafiki and was hailed a hero because he championed the total conquering and elimination of the hyenas from the animal kingdom leaving the Meerkats to have a safe and work-free place to call home.
Just like Timon, we all have that inner longing to live a more meaningful and fulfilling life. And our hearts yearn to quit the norm, defy the status quo and embark on something totally different. But in most cases, the lack of courage, fear of what people will say, and the unpopular nature of a pursuit prevents a lot of people from living their dreams. They’d rather remain in their familiar territory and comfort zone living mediocre lives than follow their heart. And as a result, they forgo the chance of becoming the hero of their own movie. There are many entrepreneurs who are stuck in boring 9-to-5 jobs as employees at the expense of becoming owners of their businesses and establishments. Great authors, talented musicians, gifted artists, creative designers, intelligent orators, brilliant athletes, computer wizards who are merely caught up in pursuits outside of their own originality and creative sweet spots. It is important you know that the responsibility to follow your heart and pursue that which makes you happy and fulfilled in life is rested on you.
“Ignore your head to follow your heart, break the rules by standing out from the crowd and you’ll be glad you did.”
One more reason why people find it difficult to make the necessary transition into a world of endless possibilities is because of the limiting beliefs in their head that engage them in limiting conversations. For example, the voice you hear in your head every time you want to venture out convincing you never to make the move because nobody in your family has ever achieved such a feat is nothing but a limiting conversation. And as a result, there’s a need to constantly and consciously interrupt the limiting conversations in your head in order to embrace a happier life. Ignore your head to follow your heart, break the rules by standing out from the crowd and you’ll be glad you did.
