Body language is a vital part of the communication of feelings, attitudes, mindset and personality. You say a lot with your body than you say with actual words because your body language only amplifies what you’re already saying. How you walk, sit, stand, gesture, speak or dress can tell exactly who you are and what your intentions are.

According to Albert Mehrabian, the Professor Emeritus of Psychology, UCLA, there are basically three elements in any face to face communication. Each of these elements play very key roles in the art of communication. They include Verbal, Vocal & Visual. The Vocal & Visual elements are regarded as a non-verbal communication. More interestingly, they all account differently for the like or dislike of the communicator in question as itemized below;
- Verbal (words) – 7%
- Vocal (tone of voice e.g. pitch, volume, speed) – 38%
- Visual (body language e.g. eye contact, gesture, smile) – 55%
So, you may ask, “How is this of value to me?” Simple. Your knowledge of the power of body language can be of value to you in many ways. You can use this knowledge to your advantage in the boardroom, classroom, job interviews, playground, during negotiations, pitches, social outings, dialogues, etc. In business, body language plays a key role in determining whether or not you make a good presentation, deliver a convincing speech, woo a potential client, make a whooping sale, deliver an amazing customer service or even win a contract. The video below reiterates a whole lot more on how your body language can inspire you to succeed.
