Purpose is to a man or woman what a rudder is to a ship and what a compass is to a traveller. I get fascinated a lot about the subject of purpose simply because it underlies everything we do or don’t do. Moreso, it’s a subject that has puzzled many people over the years for the reason that life becomes boring, lacklustre and meaningless when it is void of purpose.
This, therefore, implies that purpose is a very crucial subject to embrace for anyone who desires to live a significant and meaningful life here on earth. When you don’t have a strong definitive reason for waking up in the morning to pursue your life’s goals: attend school lectures, go to work, chase your dreams, raise your kids, assist the needy, etc. Then, you have the potential to abuse the day; the hours, the moments and opportunities that come with the rising of the sun. In the words of Dr. Myles Munroe, “Where purpose is not known, abuse is inevitable.”
“The greatest tragedy in life is not death, but a life without a purpose.”
– Dr Myles Munroe
Purpose is what gives the drive to every pursuit and it’s the incubator of all great inventions. It is the power to your ambitions, wings to your dreams, energy to your convictions and the backbone to your commitments. Purpose helps you to stay focused on set objectives and generates in you the ability and tenacity to withstand tough times. It is the bedrock of every great and enduring enterprise.
So then, what is purpose?
In the bid to define purpose, I’ve tried to collect a few definitions from various sources in order to bring some clarity and variety to the meaning. And here they are;
- “Purpose is when you know and understand what you were born to accomplish.” – Dr. Myles Munroe
- “Purpose is becoming what God created you to be.” – Rick Warren
- “The reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists.” – dictionary.reference.com
- “Purpose is the sum-total of everything you were made to deliver to the earth before you die.” – Sonnie Martins
This then implies that purpose is your assignment on earth. Just as the purpose of a product is in the mind of the manufacturer, so also the purpose of every living creature including human beings is in the mind of God. And God’s mind is revealed in his word – the holy bible.
Living becomes incredibly exciting and interesting when purpose is known. Once you can apprehend a reason for living, it sets you on a fire that no obstacle or challenge can quench. It ignites you with passion and pleasure to live the life of your dreams. It is like catching a glimpse of a future that’s available to you. So, in conclusion, have you come to terms with God’s purpose for your life?
