I read a story about a lady who was the leading salesperson in her company. She was scheduled to get the number one salesperson award at the company’s annual banquet. This lady was a real success story. She had risen above numerous obstacles to achieve her goals and was an inspiration to all of her co-workers.
On the night of the banquet, everyone was dressed in their best clothes and anxiously awaiting the moment when the lady’s name was called. Everyone in the room broke into a tremendous applause because she had overcome so much to achieve this honour. As she ran up the steps to accept her award and make her acceptance speech, she tripped on the top step, fell and slammed face down onto the stage floor.
“See, I fall down a lot …but I keep getting back up! And that is why I am getting this award tonight because I just keep getting back up.”
The room immediately became eerily silent. No one knew what to do or say because it was such an embarrassing incident. After lying there for a moment, she jumped up, ran to the podium, took the award in her hands and said “folks, many of you have asked what I did to win this award. Well, you just witnessed it. See, I fall down a lot …but I keep getting back up! And that is why I am getting this award tonight because I just keep getting back up.”
“Life is a mixture of ups and downs, highs and lows, progress and setbacks, heroic feats and comic pratfalls, pains and gains, steps forward and steps backwards, height scaled and portholes hit, heart-warming relationships and nerve breaking betrayals. It is never a tale of untroubled progress but of conflict and challenge.” – Unknown Source
Challenges help to shape and mould us to live life from a balanced perspective. They make us grow strong and tough yet flexible and loving. On the other hand, they could turn out to be permanent obstacles if they are not seen as part of what we must go through so as to ‘become’. They are supposed to serve as building blocks and stepping stones to greatness rather than be seen as stumbling blocks.
On the contrary, champions are not just those who are awarded trophies and medals but also those who display resilience in the face of challenging times. They simply imbibe the attitude of rising up again and again at every fall or failure. They never expect a tale of untroubled progress but also anticipate the ups and downs, highs and lows on the road to success. Therein lies the spirit of champions.
I’m a Champion!
