Originality for the benefit of this post is the art of being true to yourself; True to your identity, your uniqueness, your personality, your abilities and capabilities whether in business, social or personal affairs. It’s that sense of ‘nobody can do what I do, like I do it.‘
This mentality frees one from unnecessary competition and keeps one sane in a world that is constantly seeking to define or change us. Everyone of us has got some personal touch, signature or exceptional distinctiveness laced into the core of our being and that is the very element that identifies and differentiates us from other humans.
“Be yourself, everyone else is taken.” – Unknown
Frankly speaking, we live in a time when there’s a growing pressure to lose one’s originality in pursuit of what is common, popular and often celebrated. For instance, a peek at the cover pages of magazines, celebrity TV shows or the social media is enough to help us understand the gravity of this cultural pressure of losing one’s true identity in the bid to blend-in to fit-in.
As a young teenager, my desire to fit in left me wanting to be like every Tom and Harry on TV and in my neighbourhood. This earned me nothing but a world of confusion; Low self-esteem, lack of self-confidence, disregard for my own gifts and talents and the pursuit of other people’s approval of me.
I learnt quite early that you don’t need to be someone else in order to be successful or make it in life. You don’t need to fake the way you talk, laugh, walk, smile, sing, etc to be or feel accepted. Don’t lose your person in the pursuit of anything, just be you. That’s all you need to succeed.
WHY FIT IN WHEN YOU’RE BORN TO STAND OUT?
Originality is your power for shining and the key to unlocking boundless opportunities. You cannot stand out from the crowd by being someone else or living the life of a copy-cat. It only makes you a second best. Someone once said, “Be yourself, everyone else is taken.” And that is perfectly true. You’ll do yourself a lot good if you’ll live your life with a sense of originality. You have the responsibility to uncover your own unique, competitive, personal or commercial advantage; to find it, own it and live it.
God has endowed every human with unimaginable qualities to live a great and fulfilling life. Assets of some sort in the form of profound potentials, specialised skills, amazing abilities and tailored-made talents. All these were bequeathed us in their raw forms and only require that we recognise, refine and use them.
“You have the responsibility to uncover your own unique advantage; to find it, own it and live it.”
You see, regardless of how you were born – whether with a silverspoon, golden spoon, wooden spoon or no spoon at all, you have some awesome genius buried within your DNA. So, whatever your pursuit, just be original because in your originality lies your differential factor.
It’s easier to be spotted when you’re different and unique. If there’s a huge advantage that I have come to recognise in my life, I think it’s being original. Because there’s no point or gain in being a fake. More so, we only end up deceiving ourselves and falling short of our real worth and true potentials.
Again, don’t lose who you are in the bid to get where you’re going to. Be you…be original!
