Change is one word that brings a lot of dread to people’s heart as it evokes a sense of uncertainty. Some people are victims of change, others are survivors of change. But however the case, everything undergoes change and nothing ever remains the same. Even as humans, we all have to face change at some point in our lives because we are in a constant state of transition and we’re continually being transported – whether instantly or gradually – into the new, the different, the unexpected, or the unfamiliar.
As a matter of fact, life would always present us with four different types of change:
- change that happens around us
- change that happens to us
- change that happens within us
- change that we make happen.
So, to embrace change with a positive attitude and use it to benefit your life and others, here are 5 things you need to know:
#1. Change is inevitable
The moment you come to terms with the fact that change is inevitable, unavoidable and common to all creation, your life becomes suddenly flooded with peace. Such peace emanates from knowing that everyone and everything experiences change. For as long as you’re inhaling and exhaling, you’re bound to change and change is bound to happen to you. Your values and priorities will change, your interests will change, your body will change, your family relationships will change, your knowledge will change, your marriage will change, your children will change, your friends will change. Plus, you’re likely to change jobs, switch careers, move house, fail a test, pass an exam or repeat a class. It’s a constant thing that is bound to happen to every living thing.
For instance, the change in seasons from summer to autumn, from autumn to winter , from winter to spring and from spring back to summer happens without seeking permission from you and I. So, whether we prefer summer to winter or not, the seasons will change.
#2. Change is good
Change isn’t always about negatives and unpalatable experiences but also about positives and goodness. Be it a minor or a major change, change is good because it brings a whole world of freshness and newness and ushers us into a higher, deeper or greater level of responsibility.
Think about a teabag for second. When the teabag is dipped into a hot cup of water, what you see happen is that the aroma and flavour of the teabag oozes out and filling the atmosphere of the room. That’s change at work!
#3. Change herald opportunities
One of the many things that change brings along with it is opportunity. Every change is an opportunity in disguise. It may not always announce itself as being opportunity but in the end, it surely will usher you into something new, better and awesome.
#4. Change can be managed
The word ‘manage’ means the capacity to control, handle, master, or influence something. Therefore, change can be controlled, mastered and influenced. The best way to manage a change is to first understand the purpose of the change. Then to establish the process of the change and the price to pay for the change to happen. These 3Ps (Purpose, Process and Price) of change will enable us to make informed decisions in the face of an impending change.
#5. Change leads to growth
Fundamentally, change challenges us to strengthen our resolve and audacity, to increase our capacity and tenacity. It seeks to bring the best out of us. Yes, change is inevitable but growth is optional. The process of change always pay-off when we come out of it improved and completely transformed. Change demands that we grow up and mature by it. It’s a choice that we must make.
